Social Responsibility and Volunteering: The Power of Contributing to Society

Sustainability 9/18/2025

The development of societies is shaped not only by economic investment but also by an understanding of social responsibility. Volunteering activities, spanning a wide range from environmental sustainability to education, health and social solidarity, are one of the most powerful ways for individuals and organisations to add value to society.

The Goodness Movement and SOCAR Türkiye Volunteers project, implemented with this understanding, transforms individual contributions into collective power, making social impact more visible and lasting. The Social Impact Report prepared sheds light on the future by presenting the values created by volunteer projects and social investments with numerical data.

The Growth of Solidarity with the Goodness Movement

The Goodness Movement is a social responsibility approach that aims to spread the awareness of volunteering and benefit different segments of society. From education to the environment, from health projects to social solidarity, volunteers contribute to society through their efforts in many areas. In 2024 alone, 23 different events were organised, and 2,760 hours of volunteer work were carried out. Twenty thousand saplings were planted in Yamanlar, 305 children in Elbistan received stationery support, coastal clean-ups were carried out, and shelters were supported. These activities demonstrated that volunteering creates not only immediate benefits but also long-term social impact.

Contributions of SOCAR Turkey Volunteers

The SOCAR Türkiye Volunteers project, carried out with the voluntary participation of employees, strengthens social responsibility awareness within the corporate culture while also creating tangible benefits in the field.

The data in the social impact report reveals the number of people reached by projects realised through the contributions of volunteers, the social benefits created, and the long-term gains. Thus, volunteering activities become not only well-intentioned initiatives but also measurable and sustainable social investments.

According to the findings of the report, volunteering activities provide a strong return not only to society but also to employees:

  • 91% of volunteers stated that their emotional well-being had increased,
  • 90% stated that their environmental and social awareness had developed,
  • 81% stated that they had made progress in their social and professional skills.

Supporting Local Development: Petkimspor

One of the highlights of the social impact report is the contribution to regional development through sport. Petkimspor, supported by SOCAR Turkiye, stands out not only for its professional achievements but also for the social benefits it creates for young people in Aliağa and the surrounding area.

  • Petkimspor's basketball activities offer young people in the region the opportunity to play sport while also promoting healthy living, team spirit and a culture of solidarity.
  • The club's events and infrastructure work directly contribute to local development by increasing access to sport for young people in Aliağa.
  • Supporting the local community in developing a strong sense of belonging, Petkimspor is regarded both as a sports club and a vehicle for social development.

These contributions demonstrate that SOCAR Türkiye adds value to the regions where it operates not only through its economic investments but also through its work in the fields of sports, education and volunteering.

The Importance of the Social Impact Report

Our first Social Impact Report, covering the period 2020–2024, presents the impact of volunteering projects and social investments with numerical data.

  • Every 1 unit of social investment made returns approximately 3 units of value to society.
  • In the environmental field, more than 400,000 saplings were planted, 16 parks were maintained, and coastal clean-ups were carried out.
  • In education, cooperation was established with 15 different NGOs, and a wide range of activities were carried out, from supporting girls to library assistance, technical training, and digital tool support.
  • In healthcare, a new burns unit was established and capacity was increased at Aliağa State Hospital.
  • In the field of disasters, volunteers played an active role in the field, particularly after the earthquakes on 6 February, and the community was supported with in-kind and cash assistance.

These findings clearly demonstrate that the projects provide long-term, measurable and sustainable benefits.

The Social Impact Report is available on the SOCAR Türkiye website.

Strengthening the culture of social responsibility and volunteerism creates significant value not only for society but also for employee motivation and sense of belonging.

Towards the Future

The concept of social responsibility and volunteering is a journey where small contributions from individuals turn into a big impact. The Goodness Movement and SOCAR Türkiye Volunteers stand out as one of the strongest examples of this journey. The data shared in the social impact report also shows that volunteering activities not only meet today's needs but also create lasting values for a sustainable future.
