Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have brought about significant transformation in many areas in recent years, from defence to logistics, agriculture to the energy sector. Equipped with high-resolution cameras, thermal sensors and advanced data collection systems, these technologies offer critical advantages such as the inspection of hard-to-reach areas, safe inspection of hazardous areas and the acceleration of operational processes.
In energy and industrial facilities, UAVs enable safe, fast and uninterrupted inspections of chimneys, tanks, pipelines and large field areas. This not only raises occupational health and safety (İSG-Ç) standards but also increases operational efficiency.
A Pioneering Application in the Refinery and Petrochemical Sector
In the refinery and petrochemical sector, where activities carry high risks, UAV technology has become an integral part of measurement and inspection processes. The first company in the Turkish refinery unit to implement this transformation is SOCAR Türkiye Refinery and Petrochemical Business Unit.

Technology Developed through Academic Collaboration
The foundation of this technological infrastructure is based on an R&D project initiated in 2022 with the Technical University of Berlin, which was later joined by Gebze Technical University and Izmir Institute of Technology.
Data science-focused studies conducted using UAVs have enabled the production of more reliable and effective solutions by combining academic research with field experience.
Future Goals
Leveraging the advantages of UAV technology in measurement and inspection processes not only increases safety and efficiency but also facilitates the planning of maintenance and repair processes.
In the coming period, plans include expanding the existing UAV portfolio, developing customised solutions for the needs of different departments, and more widespread use of robotic systems in operations.
In short, UAV technology is fundamentally changing the approach to industrial inspection. These steps taken in the refinery and petrochemical sectors not only increase today's operational efficiency but also pave the way for the safe, sustainable and technology-focused production processes of the future.
